History

The Climbing Tree was organized as a non-profit 501(c)3 entity in the Summer of 2004, although Montrose has supported a children’s museum previously (the Montrose Children’s Museum, 1986-1999).  The Climbing Tree is now open with a new name, structure and mission.  Currently we have five Working Board members, and an additional 40 volunteers that assist with staffing and programming for the museum.

Children’s Museums are the fastest growing segment of the museum industry; there are approximately 200 in North America and another 80 in the start-up phase.  Children’s Museums promote the educational enrichment of children through hands-on learning.  There are currently seven such institutions in Colorado, but only two on the Western Slope: The Durango Children’s Museum and the Western Colorado Math and Science Center in Grand Junction.

The Climbing Tree Children’s Museum in Montrose exists to meet the need for a fun yet educational outlet for the youngest members of our community – children aged newborn through ten.  At this time there are very few programs outside of the school system that are dedicated to the educational enrichment of young, especially pre-school aged children.  We provide a facility where children and their families and caretakers come to learn through self-guided exploration and play.  We accomplish this through hands-on, scientifically sound exhibits and interactive workshops.  These activities occur in our facility where we are open to the public on a regular basis, staffed by volunteer docents from within our community.

For more information, please contact the Climbing Tree at 240-TREE (8733).

Mission Statement

  The Climbing Tree Children’s Museum values an educational emphasis of creative and imaginative play.  Our aim is to provide an atmosphere that respects each child’s pace and style of exploration, and one that encourages self-discovery and learning with every visit.

  The Climbing Tree Children’s Museum exists to:

  • Foster excitement about learning, by tapping into a child’s natural curiosity and creativity;
  • Facilitate hands-on, purpose-based play among children and grownups;
  • Further a sense of community through partnerships with existing resources in the Western Slope region;
  • Furnish the public with an affordable, safe and fun setting for recreation.

  To accomplish our mission, the Children’s Museum will:

  • Present professional-quality, interactive exhibits of interest to children aged 1-10.
  • Design special events and workshops that involve the whole family.
  • Collaborate with area businesses, schools, clubs and other resources to develop culturally-relevant and aesthetic displays.
  • Serve a diversity of audiences and promote the learning experience among all members of our community through public outreach programs.
